Visual Localisation of Mobile Devices in an Indoor Environment under Network Delay Conditions

    Get PDF
Current progresses in home automation and service robotic environment have highlighted the need to develop interoperability mechanisms that allow a standard communication between the two systems. During the development of the DHCompliant protocol, the problem of locating mobile devices in an indoor environment has been investigated. The communication of the device with the location service has been carried out to study the time delay that web services offer in front of the sockets. The importance of obtaining data from real-time location systems portends that a basic tool for interoperability, such as web services, can be ineffective in this scenario because of the delays added in the invocation of services. This paper is focused on introducing a web service to resolve a coordinates request without any significant delay in comparison with the sockets

Does housing really lead the business cycle?

The aim of this paper is to characterize the cyclical properties of Spanish real and nominal housing related variables. Our three main results are: First, housing appears to lead the business cycle. Second, fluctuation in home prices are positively related to those of residential investment, suggesting the dominant role of demand factors over supply ones. Third, there are interesting asymmetries in cyclical fluctuations: contractions in GDP appear to be briefer than expansion

In this paper we show the optimization process of urban public transportation routes based on operations research techniques. This is shown in the outline of the development and importance of public transportation planning, its stages, its design and models. We present the design of networks of bus routes showing the overview and background of suitable optimization models for the public transportation system. We developed an optimization model minimizing transfers and we discuss the results according to the proposed theory. The article ends with the main conclusions and recommendations found in the study to improve the route optimization of urban public transportation

Environmentally Assisted Cracking Behavior of S420 and X80 Steels Containing U-notches at Two DifferentCathodic Polarization Levels: An Approach from the Theory of Critical Distances

    Get PDF
This paper analyzes, using the theory of critical distances, the environmentally assisted cracking behavior of two steels (S420 and API X80) subjected to two different aggressive environments. The propagation threshold for environmentally assisted cracking (i.e., the stress intensity factor above which crack propagation initiates) in cracked and notched specimens (KIEAC and KN IEAC) has been experimentally obtained under di erent environmental conditions. Cathodic polarization has been employed to generate the aggressive environments, at 1 and 5 mA/cm2, causing hydrogen embrittlement on the steels. The point method and the line method, both belonging to the theory of critical distances, have been applied to verify their capacity to predict the initiation of crack propagation. The results demonstrate the capacity of the theory of critical distances to predict the crack propagation onset under the di erent combinations of material and aggressive environments. The authors of this work would like to express their gratitude to the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation for the financial support of the projects MAT2014-58738-C3-3-R and MAT2014-58443-P developed by the University of Cantabria

Shedding light on the motivations and performance of the eco-management and audit scheme (EMAS)

This work aims to shed light on the motivations and environmental performance of Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) registration, the more demanding voluntary certifiable international standard to adopt environmental management systems in organizations. Based on a systematic review and analysis of the outcomes of 73 scholarly empirical works published in the period from 1998 to 2021 the work makes an original contribution to the scholarly literature with the definition of a research agenda with avenues for further research. The sources of motivations related to EMAS are found to be diverse and contingent to a set of factors. Regarding performance, the results showed a mixed picture with a greater prevalence of studies underlining a positive impact of EMAS adoption. Deep implications for managers, policy makers and other stakeholders are discussed. This article is a result of a Research Group funded by the Basque Autonomous Government (Grupos de investigación del sistema universitario vasco IT763-13/GIC12- 158 and IT1073-16/GIC 15-176) and the project METASTANDARDS, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI) and co-financed with the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union (project reference PGC2018-098723-B-I00).
